FTC Warns Seafood Chains Against False Claims of Local Fish

The agency sends letters to top ten restaurants, including Red Lobster and Long John Silver’s.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent letters to America’s top seafood restaurant chains this week, informing them that false claims of local fish could warrant a formal federal investigation.

The United States imports over 80 percent of its fish, but many restaurants find that marketing their fish as locally caught brings in more customers. FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya wrote a letter to the 10 largest seafood chains, including Red Lobster and Long John Silver’s, warning that advertising any inaccurate claims about the source of their fish is considered false advertising.

“This is a new reminder to companies that it is all of the ways you’re communicating to a consumer, the net impression of that communication needs to be accurate,” Commissioner Bedoya said.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chair Khan and the commissioners of the FTC as they work to ensure restaurants do not deceive patrons about the source of fish.
  • For U.S. regulatory officials to be prudent in their assessments of harms to consumers and the actions they take to correct them.
